Hackmud is actual "hack"ing!
cqr73d
The definition of a hacker is: "A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and stretching their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary". The game promotes learning it's scripting language in order to further make your job easier, even though it allows free hand for users that want to use the direct way. :) So the comments that "It's actually crack" doesn't apply here ;> Sorry if it's not informative or anything, just felt like pointing it out :)

Thanks ultrahacker25! I'm glad it's working!! :D My hope is that the game experience will attract and give a bunch of different kinds of players a chance to play how they want to play. The scripting is just one aspect! :D

In terms of hacking == "cracking": Hackmud is to hacking as Kerbal Space Program is to orbital rocketry. Yes, it's gamey, but it's also realistic in enough ways to be very interesting for the amateur :). In terms of hacking == "tinkering": oh yeah, DEFINITELY applies. Hackmud is an amazing hacking tool. Actual, 100% real hacking, too! It gives you a full scripting language, and enough constraints to encourage cleverness (for better or for worse).

Yep, the word hacking has been transformed by the media into a "bad" thing. Hacking, in general, is just taking something that was made to do action A and change it to do action B, or even do action A in a different way. I don't think I would consider this "hacking"... It encourages learning and problem solving, but we're not really changing anything in the software/game. The scripts don't really add or change anything, they're just automated macros pretty much. I actually just purchased hackmud today and I'm already in love with it. I have a strong IT/Pentesting background and it's a nice change to have a hacking game that is strictly a terminal view, it really adds to the immersion. I've also always loved games you could script in...but really the only other one I've seen was Hack-Wars. It was an older browser-based hacking game and you could script little programs similar to scripting in hackmud. I'm rambling now, I'll go back to Steam and Notepad++. ;)
